Install the AnyConnect app from the Chrome Web Store page. Open your quick settings panel by selecting the clock in the corner of the screen. I have a Chromebook and installed Cisco AnyConnect 4.0.10159 from the Chrome Store. When I run the app it comes up, then I click on the 'Add New Connection' entry. In the dialog that pops up I give it a name (I have tried simple names, names with '@' in them, etc.) and the IP to connect to. 1. Download and install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Go to Settings in Chrome and create a VPN entry.
    • Connection to Name = UCI
    • Server = vpn.uci.edu
  3. Go to Settings and click on “VPN”, then select “Cisco AnyConnect” and “UCI.”

NOTE: In the near future, OIT will provide an alternate way to login to the VPN using 'SAML authentication'. Due to software limitations, Chromebook users will not be able to use the SAML VPN tunnels. You will need to continue using the standard DEFAULT-UCI or UCIFULL tunnels when connecting to the VPN.

The NMSU Cisco VPN (Virtual Private Network) application establishes a secure connection to our network off-campus. It allows you to perform functions that normally would only be possible while on our network such as file transfer to our web servers (FTP), as well as sending mail without authenticating on our outgoing (SMTP) mail server.

For installation instructions, choose the link for your operating system:

NMSU's Cisco AnyConnect VPN is one of five VPN apps that are available in the Chrome Web Store. Download and configure this app just as you would any other Chrome app. If you are an administrator, you can force install this app using the Admin console. You can also upload a config file if the app allows it. (The app uses the chrome.storage API to read the configuration file and apply it.)
  1. On your Chromebook home screen, navigate to the Web Store. This can be done by searching in the Search bar (on the bottom left of the screen or via the magnifying glass button on the keyboard).
  2. Once available, search the Chrome Web Store for 'Cisco AnyConnect'.
  3. Here, select the blue 'Add to Chrome' button.
  4. Once clicked, select the 'Add app' option. Now, the app will begin the installation process. Once completed, a 'Successful Installation' notification will appear and the blue 'Add to Chrome' button will change to a green 'Rate it' button.
  5. After AnyConnect has been installed, open your Search feature again and find 'AnyConnect'.
  6. Once found, select 'Add New Connection'.
  7. When prompted, enter 'NMSU VPN' in the name box, and 'vpn.nmsu.edu' in the server address box. Do not alter the certificates settings. Save these changes and close.
  8. Next, open up the Status Area in the bottom right corner and select the area where it says 'VPN Disconnected'.

  9. Select 'NMSU VPN (user)'.
  10. Next, select the appropriate Group for your task, and then enter your myNMSU Username and Password. When done, select Submit. To check your connection, open up the Status Area on the bottom right again, and look for 'Connected to NMSU VPN (user)'.
